The Equatorial Group
Matt Woods (USA)
Hailing from the sleepy seaside town of Eastbourne, The Equatorial Group is formed of five friends from various and differing musical backgrounds. By navigating and taming this musical tug-of-war, they have created three records, in which some listeners hear the shadows of Neil Young or the colours of Fleetwood Mac.
A myriad of classic influences swirl beneath the surface and their sound defies easy categorisation, often sparking lively debate among listeners. But whether defined as roots-pop, folk rock, dreamy alt-country or anglo-americana, the heart of the band lies in connection, storytelling, and atmosphere. New album 'Sunseeker' is out now on Musics Not Dead Records.
"Undercoated with flashes of Neil Young and Fleetwood Mac that fade with each successive release, the band have been relatively happy muddling away over two previous low-key albums, but Sunseeker sees them in a different league. Alternating tracks between the vocals of lead singers and songwriters Helen Weeks and Dave Davies, they've found a very special groove that can spiral away on Davies's guitar or dig down into a Ryley Walker kind of jazzy country pop. Add in the band's natural optimism and hope, and The Equatorial Group raise a high bar for UK indie country" ANDY FYFE MOJO
Matt Woods is a seasoned performer with a penchant for storytelling that's on par with Waylon Jennings and Leonard Cohen, while employing an enthusiastic guitar style and a threadbare voice that howls with honesty. Spinning tales of the rusted American Dream, the hauntings of bad decisions, and the ever-elusive promise of a better tomorrow, Woods' sound is one of gutsy, straight-forward, solid country music.
